How to Waterproof Your Jacket

Protecting your jacket from the elements is essential to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Waterproofing your jacket not only helps you stay dry in wet weather conditions, but it can also extend the life of your garment. By keeping water and moisture out, you prevent the growth of mould and mildew, which can weaken the fabric and cause unpleasant odours.

In this article, we'll share some easy steps to help you waterproof your jacket using our Premium Protector and keep it in excellent condition for years to come.

What You'll Need:

To waterproof your jacket, you'll need a few essential products that will help you clean and protect your garment. We recommend using our Liquiproof LABS Eco-Cleaner to clean your jacket and our Liquiproof LABS Premium Protector to waterproof it.

Additionally, a brush, such as our Premium Hog-Hair Brush, will help you apply the waterproofing spray, and a microfiber cloth will come in handy for wiping away any excess product. Here's everything you'll need to get started:

How to Waterproof a Jacket in 4 Simple Steps

Follow these five easy steps to waterproof your jacket, and stay dry and comfortable no matter what the weather brings.

    STEP ONE: Clean the Jacket

Before you begin, make sure the jacket is clean, free from dust and dirt, and dry. Remove any dirt or debris by gently brushing or wiping it down with a damp cloth. Use a mild detergent if necessary, but avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, which can interfere with the waterproofing.

    STEP TWO: Spray the Jacket

Next, spray the Premium Protector evenly over the entire surface from a distance of 10-15cm, until the surface is damp. For this step, you'll use the Premium Protector that penetrates the fabric of your coat.

In this step, be careful to spray around buttons, zippers, and pockets. You don't want unwanted droplets coming through!

Before spraying the entire jacket all at once, spray a bit on an inconspicuous part of the garment. Let the mist dry. Our liquid protector is clear and should dry invisible.

STEP THREE: Brush or Rub the Jacket

After spraying the garment, use a clean soft brush to gently scrub the spray into the jacket. This helps the protector bind with the fibres and gives you the highest-quality protection!

Go ahead and wipe off any spray that landed on buckles, zippers, or patent leather before they dry.

    STEP FOUR: Repeat the Process

After going over the jacket, wait ten minutes. Then, spray the jacket again! Repeat the same spray-and-brush method (steps 2 and 3). By doing this process twice, you're filling in any spots you may have missed the first time.

When you've sprayed and brushed your jacket twice, let it air dry for twenty-four hours.

    THREE TIPS:

After following these steps, your jacket is ready for any adventure. However, there are some tips you can follow to ensure a successful application of our clothes protector spray.

TIP ONE: Our Premium Protector can be used on any absorbent fabric.

Make sure the garment you are protecting is made from an absorbent fabric. This includes nubuck, suede, canvas, mesh and other fabrics. Liquiproof LABS Premium Protector spray will not fill air gaps and therefore liquids will still pass through any mesh/netting. Do not use on pre-treated, patent or waxed fabric.

TIP TWO: Re-apply the protector spray when necessary.

The successful application of our water repellant spray can last anywhere from three months up to three years. The longevity of the protector spray depends on the wear of the protected item. The more your jacket is exposed to the elements and dirt (grime, stains, rain, spills etc.) the quicker the hydrophobic shield will wear off. The protector spray should be reapplied after each time you wash your item.

TIP THREE: Always test on a discreet area first.

If your jacket is made of various materials, always perform a patch test with our protector spray on a discreet area first. Our water-based protector can potentially cause dye to run if a specific area of your jacket is not colourfast. We recommend applying Liquiproof LABS Premium Protector to new items.
