How to Clean Suede Shoes

How to Clean Suede Shoes

Suede shoes and sneakers have always been a winter staple. However, keeping suede shoes looking their best can feel like a losing battle, especially in our British climate.

Some people avoid buying suede shoes because they’re worried about how hard it might be to keep them clean and fresh. But what if we told you that we’ve just made it easier for you to keep your suede shoes looking like they did when you first took them out of the box using our suede shoe cleaner kit

How to Clean Suede Shoes at Home

1. REMOVE EXCESS DIRT

When it comes to how to clean suede shoes or sneakers, the first thing you’ll need is our premium black hog-hair brush. Gently use the shoe brush to remove any dirt and grit from the shoe.

Always brush in the same direction as the grain and be careful not to brush too hard as you could damage the suede. It's important to do this while the shoe is dry.

2. APPLY THE CLEANER

Next, you want to apply our shoe cleaner to any areas of the shoe that are still dirty or stained. The best way to do this is to make sure your shoe brush is clean and then use it to work the cleaner into the shoe.

If you are worried about applying the liquid directly on the suede, then opt for our 200ml shoe cleaner that comes with a foamer pump. The aerator cap draws in the solution to create a well-balanced mixture of product and air. This innovative design transforms the liquid into a luxurious foam without the need for chemicals or aerosol gas that can be directly pumped onto delicate items that should not be wetted.

3. REMOVE ANY EXCESS

Once your shoe is clean, use a microfiber cloth to remove any excess cleaner from the shoe and leave your shoes to fully air dry.

4. GENTLY BRUSH

Now your shoes are fully dry, you can use a clean, dry hog hair shoe brush and gently run it over your shoes to re-fluff the suede to return their even texture.

To prevent any build-up of dirt we recommend that you use the shoe brush after every time you wear your suede shoes.

How to Protect Suede Shoes

Suede is easy to stain - even water can leave a mark on your suede shoes. The question is can you make suede shoes water and dirt-repellant? The good news is you can.

The best way to protect suede shoes in the rain is with our suede protector. Ideally, you want to protect your shoes right away when they’re brand new and fresh out of the box. If you need to protect your shoes later on in their life then follow the above steps to make sure they are properly clean and dry.

Protecting your shoes with our suede waterproof spray couldn’t be easier. Simply take your clean, dry shoe and spray the shoe protector evenly over the shoe from a distance of 10-15cm until the surface is damp.

Then use a soft bristle shoe brush to work the cleaner deep into the suede. Leave the shoe to air dry for at least ten minutes and then repeat. Once you’ve applied two coats of the shoe protector spray, leave your shoes to fully air dry for 24 hours before wearing them. It’s that simple!
